Hypnosis for Fertility
In our culture today, the idea that it is difficult to conceive is constantly being reinforced. Even television commercials for ovulation tests make a point of saying that getting pregnant is not easy to do. The repetition of this message affects us on a subconscious level, increasing the stress and doubt that often accompany the process of "trying" to conceive a baby.
More and more women are being diagnosed with "unexplained infertility" - in other words there is no measurable, physical reason for their being unable to conceive. Consider also that in vitro fertilization (IVF), has only about a 20% success rate. Clearly, there is an emotional component to fertility issues. Consumed by the process of getting pregnant, women may experience a rollercoaster of emotions - afraid to trust in their body which they may feel is betraying them; resentful of others who have babies; tired of the charting and temperature taking; unable to enjoy intimacy; obsessed with the calendar; frustrated by the friction this may be causing with their partner - and on and on.
Unfortunately, this can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When we experience chronically high levels of stress, it affects us on a physiological level. In a constant state of "fight or flight," our systems become over-adrenalized and our hormone levels go out of balance - not the optimal physical conditions for achieving pregnancy.
However, telling these women to "just relax and it will happen" may only serve to make them more aggravated and discouraged. While it may be true that relaxation will improve the situation, attempting to "just relax" on a conscious level is generally an exercise in futility.
Whether conceiving naturally or using assisted reproductive technology (ART), hypnosis is a powerful complement. Hypnotherapy reduces stress and fear and increases confidence, instilling a sense of control in the client, which in turn enables her to maximize her chances of conceiving naturally and/or increase the success of medical assistance.
Studies have indicated that "infertile" women using mind/body techniques have a 42-55% conception rate as compared to 20% for those who do not. For more scientific data on hypnosis for fertility, click here.
Hypnosis is ideal for addressing emotional blocks that have created physical issues by restoring a sense of balance and health and trust; by helping a woman imagine and experience her success on a subconscious level; and by allowing her to get in touch with her inherent strength and intuition.
